Exactly this. They had a film with a bunch of characters that most people have never heard of. So they thought we need a big name and That was The Joker.

And it could have worked if they would have just made him the bad guy of this movie instead of Enchantress. And the reason why Batman couldn't stop him is because he was off doing things for the JL movie.

Other than that he should have only been in flashbacks for Harley and the rest of the time he was on screen could have been used for the other characters on the Squad.

He did have a larger role, but most of it was cut from the film.
Yeah but still he severed no purpose other than just being there.

He did serve a purpose, you can't have Harley's first introduction in a movie and not have the Joker in it. There is no Harley without the Joker.
After a flashback there was no reason to have him in this. Unless he was the villain of the movie which he wasn't but should have been.

Harley is a strong enough character for the Joker to have only been in flashbacks.

This basically. And bringing him in JUST to have him in Harley Quinn's origin wasn't just lacking in his use, but it also wasn't enough. They wanted him to have some sort of present time appearance so they just plopped his little scheme in the middle of the movie (sloppy & badly done, but still).

When I left the theater a lot of things I heard in reviews was "I wanted more of the Joker" because people (mostly) were satisfied in the Joker but still wanted more of him. That's better than having him just in the origin story & people saying "I want more of the Joker" because "are you kidding me--they ONLY used him in the origin story".

To be fair, their butts were in a bit of a corner & they had to do something.

Well then people would have really complained if he was just in flashback scenes. They wouldn't make joker the villain of a suicide squad movie.
Pretty much the problem was they over promoted him which made the general audience expect him to play a larger part. WB fault tbh

For multiple reasons.

1) Harley Quinn: Being one of the main characters in this variant of the Suicide Squad. The writers had to work out her backstory since it's her first appearance on the big screen. The Joker plays a major part in her backstory.

2) Story Cuts: Joker was originally a larger character in the film, however the studio thought it best to cut out a lot of his scenes as they stole from the main cast. If you watch the trailers, you can see at least four scenes with the Joker that never appear in the movie.

3) Marketing: Joker is the most well known villain in comic book history. Having the Joker in the film is guaranteed money. Not only ticket sales but also in toy, clothing and an array of other merchandise.

4) Batman: Having Joker in Suicide Squad allows them to set up the solo Batman film. It also allows them to receive criticism of the character to see what they are doing right, and wrong with the Joker. This allows them to "tweak" the character for the upcoming film with Batman in order to give the best possible performance.

So dumb.

He was there for Harley's character past and present. Therese a scene that he actually has with Batman that I'm really looking forward to see.
Past yes. His scenes in the present day, however, was superfluous with the cut they decided to go with. If they stuck with the original where she wanted him to help the rest of the squad, resulting the argument where he pushed her out the chopper, then yeah, he'd have served a purpose. For the theatrical cut, he did not.
