Now the prequels were damaging enough but everything outside of the movies is considered 'the Expanded Universe' and many fans go crazy over it. The clone wars, Boba Fett surviving, the Knights of the Old Republic, the hundreds of Jedi supposedly left over from Order 66, there's a LOT. Mostly involving characters you have literally never heard of doing awesome, awesome things.
But it somewhat ruins, or at least dampens the original movies. Too much artistic license and freedom is given to these authors who publish these games or write these comics and the idea that some of it should be taken as actually happening is kinda laughable.
EXAMPLE: People surviving.
Boba Fett's the best example here, as i'm sure you know in the EU Boba Fett didn't die in Return of the Jedi and supposedly crawled his way out of the Sarlaac Pit and went off to be the most badass and fanservice'd character ever. The thing is though....was Boba Fett ever even that good? Honestly if anything he's shown to be quite a clutz- a standard bounty hunter with an awesome design. All the guy does is ship Han to Jabba the Hutt and then wait around in his club for a year or two...it makes little sense why this guy is so loved or why he's (apparently) such a badass. Nah, you're changing that character.
The Emperor. The awesome ending to the Saga yes? Vader's redemption and the death of the Sith? Nope. Apparently Sidious didn't even die here. I don't know why or what he goes on to do but christ that is lame. That totally dampens the impact of the Return of the Jedi's ending. Actively doing the original source material a disservice.
Order 66. All of the jedi being wiped out, the only two canon survivors are Yoda and Obi-wan Kenobi, both who go on to live very hidden lives on empty homeworlds. The jedi are basically extinct and these two only survived by being in the right place at the right time. Order 66 is maybe the best scene in all the films and is such a big moment, yet apparently according to every other piece of media there are literally hundreds left.
Another point would be scenes like this.
Palpatine tells Anakin about a 'fairy tale' about a Sith who could create life. The scene is subtle and actually really well shot and acted for the prequels, it's hinted that with all the talk of midichlorians it was Palpatine who may have even created Anakin. Either way it's a key moment where Anakin is being seduced and manpiulated. The guy didn't even have to be a real person, it could've been a fairy tale with a relevant moral, it couldve been just what he wanted to hear, it could've been Palpatine imagining Anakin's future and it could've been Palpatine suggesting he breathed life into Anakin. It's a great moment.
The EU treats this subtlety like a brick to the head and then BOOM. Nope he's a physical person who definitely existed and he looks like this:
roll on the 100 issue origin story telling us every little thing about him loooool, a subtle and tense scene ruined.
Not every little bit of lore has to be fully fleshed out and explored in full detail, have a little subtlety Star Wars EU.
