Of course. The whole "being torn apart" part of the chapter showed that he was about to lose himself, until he pulled himself back from the edge using Rin, his motivation, as a means to control the Juubi, and take an incomplete form of the Sage.

This actually is a nice way to think about it, and it is a nice way to justify Obito's thoughts of Rin.
