What everyone else said. And he wanted to beat up one of Danzo's pets to let him know he's still alive. He wanted him to know he was still out there and would kill him if he touched Sasuke
He wanted to be seen as the bad guy. Itachi would never kill Kakashi. If he wanted to Kakashi would be sitting in a wheelchair right now traumatized.

To render him useless, he had no intentions of wanting to fight Kakashi or anyone else for that matter. Kisame and Itachi only went to the village to obtain Naruto.

He went to the village to remind Danzo, further more you have me thinking hhmmm Itachi didn't trust tobi.... maybe he was subconsciously "teaching" kakashi so he could protect sasuke

It was either that or kill Kakashi. He needed to incapacitate him, and even Kakashi wondered why Itachi didn't kill him. He never even wanted to fight in the first place. Plus, it was the perfect opportunity to tell Danzo he was still alive.

to make kakashi suffer as much as possible for no reason other than for fun. itachi is pure evil and utterly sociopathic with no empathy for anyone or anything but hismelf. also shown when he coldly ordered sasuke to murder his friends for power.
he is evil so hes not acting
for no reason as peopel keep reminding me, no one would believe him even if he did try to tell them
and mere hours after that, itachi completes the destruction of sasuke's mind by torturing him for 24 hours and beating him almost to death
death is preferable to sadistically torturing someone for several days. ask any captive of war.
no he didnt. he could have used a clone and retreated, he could have incapactiated him with a physical blow to the neck, he could have used a distraction like a katon blast etc. i find it funny that itachis hyped to be a genius yet his big ideas for avoiding killing people are wasting chakra and putting people in comas.

itachi never ordered kisame to kill kakashi-he wanted to "take him in for questioning" or something like that. Plus, I am pretty sure he realised gai was on the way-which is why he ordered kisame to do it at that moment.(kisame never did anything unless itachi said so when they were together)

im sick of people saying "he had to" and "he had no choice". BULLSHIT.
if hes as fukin strong and smart as the manga hypes him up to be, he should have NO PROBLEM AT ALL taking down asuma kurenai and kakashi without harming a hair on their heads, and then stabbing kisame with totsuka to finish up.
the logic that he had to to maintain his "evil persona" is crap and does not fly.
