It could be for a variety of reasons. Schools have just started a new term, so I expect most users are too busy with their studies. Others may have got tired of the recent troll threads and decided to leave for a while.

The hack took a pretty big toll on NB as well. I've noticed it's been somewhat quieter since then, with less threads being made each day. It's bound to get worse without open registrations.
