Why Hashirama cells and not Senju cells?

What makes Hashirama's tissues so special? What happened to him that sets his body apart from everyone in his clan? Why not Tobirama's cells?

Come to think of it, why the hell does only Hashirama have Mokuton? Did he invent it or was it bestowed on him somehow?
