why exactly did Kuma help the straw hats?

I re-read a few chaptes about saboady arc.. and i'm not sure why exactly he helped them.. however im sure its one of these 2 scenarios..

1) he knew they were gonna get killed by Kizaru.. and he wanted them to live since he was in Dragon's crew?

or?

2) he knew they were gonna be no match for the new world at their current state.. so he sent them flying so they could train for 2 years?

The first. He's primary intention was to protect them from being killed. The fact that they landed on the islands they did was more due to kuma's way of doing things. He sends people where they want to go xD

It was both reasons. Kuma was working as a double agent for the Revelutionary army, and so helping Dragon's son as well as people against the government made sense. Also, he could have easily seen they had nothing on the new world, and thus sent them to places to be trained.

We still; however, do not know why he volunteered to become the Pacifista.

First one, how is kuma going to know if they are going to train or not. Luffy decided to train because he's too weak to save Ace.
