Why does Kankuro wear makeup?

I used to think it was because he was a drag queen but now, i really really want to know why. Kishi explained whe Gaara has the dark eyes, why Naruto has the whiskers and those are features they are born with. So i dont undrstand why Kankuro wears makeup. I think its because without it, he looks like a filler character. Your opinions please?

And bunraku ( Japanese puppet theatre) they wore black so you didn't pay attention to the people controlling the puppets on stage and sometimes wore face paint ( purple paint represents nobility) and be wears purple because he is the son of the 4th kazekage and now brother of the 5th so he is royalty in the sand village.
