I was reading a thread a little while ago, and there was this huge debate about canon vs filler, and I agree with the people who said that some of these "canon purists" take Kishimoto way too seriously!

Tell me this. Why does it matter whether or not a piece of media is canon or filler? Purists, I want you to seriously think about this, because here's how I see it:

A plot point's status as canon or filler does not affect its quality or how much I enjoy it, and I don't know about you canon purists out there, but I personally read/watch manga/anime for enjoyment, for the story, for the action, for the slice of life, and whatever else I want to see. Now, if you wish, you may argue that the quality of Kishi's work is better than that of SP or Ikemoto, but that argument actually has nothing to do with the work's status as canon or filler. That more so has to do with Kishi's skill as a writer vs SP's (and Ikemoto's) skills as writers. If the roles were reversed and SP wrote the manga while Kishi did the anime, their writing skill levels wouldn't be any different from how they are now, and so both parties would produce the same quality of work as they do with their actual jobs that they have now.

Does a work's status as filler take away those literary devices (the action, the humor, the slice of life, etc...)? Can you not enjoy something that was written by someone other than the original manga artist?

Some of you people really treat Kishi like a deity.

Honestly, the only situations in which I see the whole canon vs filler issue as being relevant, is in versus match scenarios, or debates about plot points that are portrayed in contradictory manners by the anime and manga. Other than that, I don't see why people like 123fire get crucified for simply enjoying new content.

I have even seen some canon purists contradict themselves entirely.

There was one particular member who said that the anime was bad at the time when the Naruto Gaiden arc was about to start. His reason for saying that it was bad was because we were going into rehash (since this particular person, and presumably the rest of us had already read Gaiden). However, this viewpoint makes no sense for a canon purist because Gaiden was actually canon (and it was written in manga form by Kishimoto himself, not Ikemoto, not SP, but Kishi). Nevertheless, the member still insisted that it was bad since he had already read it.

So what do we basically get from this statement?: We get that this person does not like old rehashed stuff.

Ok, fair enough, but then it was pointed out to him that the anime might add new stuff. Then the guy complained that this would be filler, which was apparently still bad. Ok, what the heck? First you don't like the old stuff. Then you don't like the new stuff.

What do you like then? This is something that I don't get about canon purists. Why do they even bother watching or reading if they hate rehash and won't accept anything new?

Anyway, that is just my two cents on the matter. By the way, this is not to fire shots at the particular member whom I referred to. That was just one prominent example that I remember.

What do you think?

I think you should go back to that thread instead of trying to revive this discussion again and it is not about hating, stop with that, it is about what leads and the Manga in the case of Naruto was always upfront.

The only hate I can understand people have regarding fillers is that they stop the original story and everyone has to wait 4 months until Lee finally stops fighting Shira.

Does it really? I mean, how often does the anime add something that contradicts the manga so heavily that it actually tells a different or opposite story from the manga?

I can think of one example, and that is the Otsutsuki fillers. Other than those (which are rare), name me some times when the anime actually brought in would be continuity issues.

Also, how does entirely new filler (like the Sumire arc or the Kirigakure arc that is happening now) contradict the manga or mess with continuity? What about the overall plot did something like the Sumire arc make unclear? What did it contradict from the manga?

But what is about what leads though? Is an individual's ability to enjoy the content contingent upon what leads? Is the quality of the work or the literary devices contingent upon what leads?

I too can understand the disdain when people are waiting for key story events to happen, but the anime is in filler. However, I can't understand why those who enjoy filler at times like now, are looked at with such scorn and derision.

That's not why he's often criticized. He is criticized because he falsely proclaims that blatantly filler material is canon, and expects the rest of the Base to treat it as such.

Nobody cares if you like filler or not, but personal preference cannot change the fact that filler is filler.

My disdain for filler comes from the idea that sometimes they do things in the episodes that really brings some depth to a character or a relationship between two, and then it's not real. It's like the only reason I enjoy this shit is because it advances itself, but if you're showing me some bullshit that doesn't count essentially I feel like my times been wasted. I don't enjoy filler because in the end it's not really part of the story, it's just fanfic that got animated.

It may not be a real part of Kishi's story, but it is still a story in itself. Why not enjoy that?

Besides, I could see where you are coming from if the original main series was still running, but at a time like now where all we have in terms of "canon" is a monthly manga, then if you consider filler as not counting then almost nothing counts. Aren't you just ruining your own enjoyment if you perceive the content like that?

Fillers cannot be used to back arguements because the events don’t happen in the true story. Fillers are glorified what ifs that are great for enjoyment, but don’t help with progression of the series, some may shed light on a situation, but techniquely its a “what-if” light. But all in all most comments I have read on the base never faulted fillers for lack of enjoyment as much for the lack of being part of regular continuity. Also the movies are also usually filler too...

Fillers are for pure entertainment but people twist it into factual feats or plot

At this point, we should just drop this whole filler or canon crap. The Boruto manga and anime really blurred that line, after all.

Wonder what people are gonna do when the anime passes the manga and then shows new content with the manga following the same plotline but just delayed.

I dont have a problem when people enjoying anime for actions and add-ons. But when you come down here to NDS and created threads to spreading what you believe happen in anime is a fact and blatantly justifies it, I cant just sit down and watching the lies flowing freely.

Keep that into yourself and anime and dont act as a messenger.

Filler was so bad back in p1 that it made me hate it forever. Just my 2 cents. There are some enjoyable fillers.

Fillers are the saving grace of this series

Not when you only have 8 Canon episodes and 34 filler eps in one year :lol

Then you have the fact that the filler eps have better Animation quality than the actual canon eps :lol

I agree for the most part. If filler is done right, sometimes you don't even realize it's filler if you haven't read the manga, and I think that's how it should be. I had no idea that the 3 tails arc in shippuden was filler until later on because it blended well into the story. Show the watcher gaps the manga didn't cover, but only if they are interesting events. I think it works especially well if it's something touched on but never shown. Obviously if it is not executed well, it will still be bad.

It's an unpopular opinion, but for the purpose of debates I don't think that filler should always be off-limits. When filler depicts and expands upon a topic or event that is known to have happened, it's essentially giving additional parts of the story the manga didn't cover which makes it relevant to the overall plot. I don't think Kishimoto if asked would say that all of it was fake, and its not part of the Naruto universe as a whole.

Examples:

-3 tails arc: showed capture of 3 tails by akatsuki which was known to have happened.
-Tales of a gutsy ninja: expanded Jiraiya backstory
-6 tails/utakata arc: involved a known jinchuriki and expanded upon him
-Sound 4/Seven ninja swordsmen revival: expanded upon existing characters
-Kakashi shadow of the anbu black ops: expanded Kakashi backstory
-Chunin exam: showed capture of Fuu and expanded on her character and chunin exams which were known to have happened
-Itachi's story: expanded upon itachi's backstory
-Ashura/Indra arc: expanded upon existing individuals from the past vital to plot

He sure will not say its fake but he would say its 'another' story.

Another thing you need to know if manga told someone story/back story in black and white(only words) then manga gave the story an animation and added animation, it can be justify. Like you said here "known to have happened". At least the characters had 60/70% of their story covered in manga.

But the problem comes when certain characters only had no more than 10% of their story being covered in the manga. E.g, all backstories about Otsutsuki family.

You cant say their anime story was known to actually happen. They showed Tenji as Kaguya's husband but Manga never gave a glimpse about Kaguya's husband. Even Databook never recognized him as Kaguya's husband. Kaguya and her offspring and future successors stories were so loose that any bad attempts in telling their backstory will end in disaster and contradiction upon contradiction.

But Kishi Kishi will tell you it just 'another' story nor canon nor fake
