He sure will not say its fake but he would say its 'another' story.
Another thing you need to know if manga told someone story/back story in black and white(only words) then manga gave the story an animation and added animation, it can be justify. Like you said here "known to have happened". At least the characters had 60/70% of their story covered in manga.
But the problem comes when certain characters only had no more than 10% of their story being covered in the manga. E.g, all backstories about Otsutsuki family.
You cant say their anime story was known to actually happen. They showed Tenji as Kaguya's husband but Manga never gave a glimpse about Kaguya's husband. Even Databook never recognized him as Kaguya's husband. Kaguya and her offspring and future successors stories were so loose that any bad attempts in telling their backstory will end in disaster and contradiction upon contradiction.
But Kishi Kishi will tell you it just 'another' story nor canon nor fake
The reason I included if done well was for situations like the Kaguya backstory arc, it was sloppy at times. Like you said, since the manga provided virtually no backstory for Kaguya, without a proper framework it wasn't written well by someone who wasn't Kishi. I think it could have worked. We already knew about Kaguya, her sons, and Ashura and Indra. We did get a general story. I still enjoyed it and prefer it over nothing, but it had definite issues.
