It's the only word in USA that refers to a place. US-ers is awkward, even though it's easy to say and understood if we say we're from the U.S. The only thing I can compare it to is the USSR. The inhabitants were known as Soviets, which was the only word in the abbreviated country name that was specific and identifiable.
