You are American whether you want to be or not. What do you call people from North America? North American. What do you call people from the combined continents North and South America? Americans.
The continents were called the Americas before the country itself was even made. Therefore proving that the Country is named after the Americas, not anything else. Which means, If Mexico and Canada were to become two states of the same country, they would also be called United States of America. Why? Because they are two United States in America. I don't get how this concept is hard to grasp.
Americas -> North/South America -> Canada/Mexico/USA

Your implication is that for some odd reason the term 'Americans' stops at Canada and Mexico simply because a group of states coined the term United States of America.
