To my understanding, the original Japanese name for the man was "Pein" (in fact I think that version of his name came first from the manga), however because of translations from japanese to english, it has been more widely accepted as "Pain". But they both obviously refer to the same character.

Well it's controversial since the Japanese characters use the letters making it Pein but it was said that it was because of how they pronounce some letters and that Kishi's intent was to convey word - Pain.(>_>) And after early scans many of it were translating it as Pain.

The guy used to use the word pain every five minutes anyway. :p

I've always called him Pein, but that's mainly because I watched the anime in which it was translated that way. The spelling of 'Pain' is used majorly in the US Dubbed version. I guess it comes down to individual preference on which way you spell it. :ghehe:

I think it's Pain as he is supposed to mean the pain itself, he is the bringer of pain and so on and so forth. So, as far as I'm concerned and I kno w, it Pain, not Pein... But, in the end, it's about the same character so... anyway.
