Why do people treat Naruto like a Competition?

I wanna analyse something about our community today that's interested me since I joined in 2011. I'm talking about the idea of fandom wars and all the bickering sh*tstorms that occur when any 2 characters are even hinted at being opposed (Kabuto/Itachi, Hashi/Maddy, Tobirama/Minato, Obito/Maddy, Naruto/Sasuke etc etc) and hell, sometimes even when they have nothing in common and have never met (Minato VS Itachi cough cough)

Well obviously, but there's people who still treat Naruto Shippuden like a story and just pick favourites along the way but then there's people (who I only discovered because of this site) who see the manga as a competition, like picking a sports team in the world cup, these people expect the manga to bend to their character and don't see a narrative, arcs or characters- just feats. :')

The majority of popular threads you'll get on this site ever since like the early days are ones made by people just making controversial statements that incite a pointless and long argument with no absolute answer. When 2 popular characters fight in the manga posters will pick one of the sides and end up treating it like a football match on who will win rather than what actually makes sense for the narrative.

For example: Of course Kabuto was never going to win Uchiha bros fight, the plot needed him gone yet people still argue he would win/is still stronger and vice versa. The amount of times me as a passive Kabuto fan have said anything about Kabuto and been met the above scan as if it's some kind of trophy and smart comeback is staggering. As if the totally unrelated point about Yakushi is now apparently redundant because Kabuto was a villain and villains get defeated.

Again, Naruto and Sasuke are clearly equals right now because for the sake of the plot they literally need to be otherwise Kishi is hypocritical and these chapters don't make sense yet fans of both side are so sure that their character is the better one before ultimately moving onto the next 'fandom war' and forgetting about the previous one. The word 'bandwagoner' has never been more relevant. Hell sometimes the two fanbases/characters in question don't even have to fight! They can be on the same team and fight alongside one another and fans will still treat dialogue and the tiniest little detail in comparison, like in the Juubito fight when Tobirama and Minato constantly got compared. Over-analysis.

Why do we do this? This isn't a normal fanbase geek mentality, it's a competitive community and you don't get it in many other places. So why does it happen? What's the difference with the anime/naruto fanbase?

Some of them do, but a lot of them don't actually care who would win if their characters fought. They just like the social aspect of arguing with another person.

I agree.

Because people love fighting over minor things.

I've lost all my interest in the plot, at this point VS battles are the only things that interest me about this manga.

It's not a competition , I can bet you anything that those people don't even enjoy Naruto to the fullest .........some people shouldn't be reading mangas to be honest .

This ^

People just like debate over things, regardless of whether it was meant to go the way it did or not. Some find it entertaining, some do it becuase they literally take the manga far too seriously and get really upset over such things. Others do it to simply generate ire amongst the other members for a good laugh or simple juvenile entertainment.

I'm sure Itachi met Minato when he was like 4 or 5. Kushina and his momma were the trillest best friends in their time.

OT: Everyone (especially the Itachi d*ck riders) that always says this and that and this and that over bullshit. It never happened why act like these characters would do this shit and that shit? I swear sometimes these forumers are more broken than Kaguya's bipolar moment in the recent chapter.

Well people can read media texts however they like and interpret it in their own way.....but I agree, they are missing SO much. Like the point of why all of this is happening. I guess that's what a genre like 'Shonen' that focuses exclusively on fighting offers that kind of experience. I personally don't understand the appeal in it but....it's there.

This.

Its mostly just for fun, although their are a few whack jobs who are so obsessed that they will probably go ballistic if their favorite doesn't turn into a god and rule the Narutoverse in the end.

Well that much is obvious, people love to bicker and history has shown we can do it over literally anything. Who we think made the world, our favourite things, hell even the colour we are- we'll argue and wage wars over anything no matter how trivial.

The roots of NB have been debating over fav characters. It's just new members take it to serious and start insulting people. Sasuke haters honestly started it which made the arguments way more hostile than they use to be.

No they didn't. You sound really childish 'they started it'

It's been going on with the hype surrounding characters like Itachi and Jiraiya all the way back from the early days, hype that Kishi created and seems to actively encourage.

Yeah I feel Ya .......there's nothing wrong with debating of course it's natural , but people in here take it overboard , with the bashing or no arguments whatsoever only hate , which is what brings the sh1ts storms to live :/ .
