Why do people treat Naruto like a Competition?

I think it has a lot to do with the aspect of debating. Some do treat it as a competition though.

It's been going on with the hype surrounding characters like Itachi and Jiraiya all the way back from the early days, hype that Kishi created and seems to actively encourage.

They did people hate on Sasuke so much that any respect for him is treated like a crime. You're were instantly insulted on a personal level not even the character himself. Pretty sad it still goes on till this day.
