People lately always criticize Naruto and rasengan by saying that Naruto only uses one jutsu all the time. They treat all variants as just plain rasengan (which is not very wise). Consider this:
If I shoot you with a water gun, is it the same as me shooting you with a shot gun because both of them are considered guns?
Let me explain how this scenario is similar to the case of rasengan.
Different rasengan variants have many different and deadly effects.
1. wind style rasenshuriken cuts on a cellular level (including doing nerve damage and causing paralysis) and causes an explosion. This is a long range jutsu.
2. Lava style rasenshuriken burns opponents to smithereens while likely still cutting them with the wind. This is long range. It was enough to cut the God tree!
3. Magnet style rasengan is capable of binding and sealing opponents. Short range.
4. Planetary rasengan uses multiple rasengans that move in a circular direction around a larger rasengan. The force of multiple rasengans applying pressure in different directions and in different places on a person's body can literally tear a person's body apart. Short range.
5. Senpou chou oodama rasengan serves as a nice and simple explosion attack. This is mid range.
6. Base rasengan concentrates chakara onto a spot on a person's body and then literally grinds that spot. It then explodes and sends the person flying! This is short range.
7. Bijuudama rasenshuriken can destroy large areas or targets. Long range
8. Gudoudama rasenshurikens can even negate ninjutsu and erase things on contact beyond a molecular level!
Furthermore, rasengan can come in various sizes and quantities.
As you can see, the different variants, though being called rasengans, are actually very different jutsus!
They clearly come with different effects as the situation requires (cellular destruction, burning, sealing, etc...) and they even vary between ranges as the situation requires!
Therefore, rasengan doesn't deserve nearly as much bash as it gets, because it is actually a very versatile jutsu!
If you give me a crappy reason such as "it still uses the same shape", then you are just being petty and pathetic! A jutsu is not about its "originality" or "creativity". It is about the effect of the jutsu and its usefulness in various situations!
Yes shape does have an effect on an attack's range, but Naruto has plenty of other ways to compensate for this (truth seeking balls, bijuu bombs, chakara arms, frog kata style, tailed beast powers like the one Kokuo gave him, shadow clone jutsu, summoning jutsu, etc...).
Conclusion:
It is not wise to just dismiss all rasengans as the same! Remember, getting shot with a water gun (or a base rasengan) is not the same as getting shot with an AK-47 (or a lava style rasenshuriken) despite the fact that both of these things have the word "gun" (or "rasen") in them.
