Some hate the character itself, as someone quite expertly put it

Crazy, Arrogant, cocky, Selfish, Psycho, Back stabber, self centered, Emotional, quiet, Killer, Emo, lonely, sad, Smart ass, Bully... Would you hang out with that type of person?

then some hate him because of his fans, yes, fans are also the reason why people's perception of a character changes

If you start excessive wanking, people will start doing the opposite, they will start finding faults in it and eventually begin disliking the said character for it

Precisely. Their expectations are relevant to that of a half-assed fanfiction. I'm glad Sasuke took a realistic turn.Can't really expect less from people though, misconception is a part of their nature. :|
