As for my experience of this: girls do seem a bit more comfortable in sharing than guys, even here in Sweden, most probably because of what we perceive as acceptable, what of this we implement and so on. Though I can not really say I've personally seen it to the extremes some here describe. I know how some share clothing, though never underwear unless the situation calls for it(emergencies etc.), go to the toilet together and do whoever-knows-what.
For me, as a guy, I don't see a problem in sharing as long as consideration for privacy is there as well. I don't mind lending clothes to someone, though I probably wouldn't do it to the same extent girls do it(those I know of), sharing a bed... If it's big and there ain't no hugging action, no probs really. As for food, I snatch some at times, because I can and they're not paying attention, deal with it.

Oh, and as to why this kind of behaviour came to be.. All is relative!

Not true. Depends on the context and whom you are with and if it work only 5-10% times, it's probably worth it. It's not like all the girls always take someone with them. Many don't bother at all. Some do just out of habit and some really do not feel safe for various reasons. I don't remember ever asking someone to accompany me nor I usually volunteered to go with someone.

Also sometimes bystanders need a hint before they intervene. I moved away last time I saw a situation escalate somewhat. I was not sure if they wanted help. Though I stayed near door to see if it subsides and the moment girl asked me to help I called authorities in.

They even stated it in their results that the effect is greater with greater numbers, which necessarily doesn't mean someone won't act, as your example states, sometimes they do and sometimes they don't, making the 'not true' answer kinda..
Anyway, yeah, it's probably worth it if you go with someone you know, but not something one should count on, because just as it depends on whom you go with, it also depends on what danger you face.

Pretty much all of this. I have never in my life seen girls interact with each other in such a manner. The only people who would do what you listed are lesbian/bisexuals. Straight girls don't do that. Heck, I've known my best friend for six years and I wouldn't even think to do the things you listed.

this question just stems from the fact that it appears that no matter where i go i keep seeing girls doing these things, regardless of Race, Religion, Feminist, misogynist, orientation, no matter how studious, no matter how much into sports, all girls appear to do perform these weird traits. well except one girl, she was weirded out when the other girls did it to her, but she still enjoyed it.
