The fact that Obito VS Itachi isn't a total one-shot in either direction and that it is majorly debated seems to imply it wasn't worth the risk of finding out. Itachi's entire plan would've died if he was wrong about being able to take Obito. He kept his distance.

Because Itachi was aware of his limits, and I respect that.

Sorry but Itachi was everybody's ***** at some point. He got manipulated by Danzo, worked for Obito under Akatsuki, obeyed Nagato's orders and even got used like a puppet by Kabuto. :| *shots fired*

Even if Itachi had a way to kill him, I doubt he would. He's never killed any party unless they were a direct threat at the time. Nor does he view people as black and white, he understands everyone works for their own cause and lives in their own "reality". He even spared Kabuto (who was 50% responsible for starting the shinobi world war) much to Sasuke's dismay. The amaterasu activation was set for a time when Tobi would definitely be encountering/attempting to harm Sasuke.

bold- Correct term is blackmailed. Itachi knew what he was getting into and accepted it. Anyone who cared for both sides like he did would be caught in the same predicament.

Also, that's not an accurate representation of the swear word you so eloquently chose to use. Every shinobi in this manga worked under someone else or for someone else's benefit at some point. By that definition every single character would qualify.

I personally feel as though Kishi created the character - Itachi, out of confusion and in order to clear all negative remarks against him, he just considered the character to be known as inscrutable and mysterious. He gave Itachi these qualities and even described him as a prodigy. But what was all of that for. He lived longer than Shisui, in terms of considering the screen time he got, and yet he accomplished nothing substantial. He failed to protect everything dear to him, which meant everything to him. He failed to protect his best friend Shisui, his only brother Sasuke from getting manipulated/brainwashed by Orochimaru and Obito, who were both villains at some point and even failed to protect his own peaceful village Konoha. And that's why I think of Itachi as a clearly overrated character, but then again that word seems to be somewhat overused a little since there are some clowns who think its fine to just throw it around mindlessly. :hmm:

Although he may've been pretty sharp in analysis at times during battle, Itachi was not very good at decision making during battle as he failed to subdue the major villain(Obito) while he succeeded against Orochimaru, causing him to leave Akatsuki. Sure every major character lived and followed orders throughout, Itachi was a different case as he could not really think for himself and actually distinguish between right and wrong. You could say because of this, he was indirectly the cause of Konoha's destruction and manipulation/exploitation of his brother by major villains. :eww:

Because Obito would actually have been the one to kill Itachi.

I'll reply to this but afterwards will not so that the thread will not get too much off-topic. And this post at least relates to the thread somewhat in that towards the end it mentions both Obito and Itachi. :)

I respect your opinion but at the same time disagree. Entirely.

Itachi was meant to have a negative opinion among the fandom when he was first introduced. That was the point.

He gave Itachi these qualities and even described him as a prodigy. But what was all of that for.
Because it was justified and not empty hype unlike what most other characters received.

He lived longer than Shisui

Shisui died at an older age. Itachi was just 21 when he died.

, in terms of considering the screen time he got, and yet he accomplished nothing substantial. He failed to protect everything dear to him, which meant everything to him.

He protected Sasuke and the village during his lifetime. Also preventing a war in his younger years which led to the shinobi world being at peace overall for his lifetime as well.

He failed to protect his best friend Shisui,
That wasn't his job. Since when are younger brother figures supposed to protect older brother figures? It's not his fault that Shisui decided to naively go behind his back and stop the coup... only to lose his eye and fail miserably.

his only brother Sasuke from getting manipulated/brainwashed by Orochimaru and Obito
Sasuke is his own person. Not a puppy. People live and learn, this is a part of life. Itachi cannot do every single thing for Sasuke, this is not possible nor could something like this be averted.

who were both villains at some point and even failed to protect his own peaceful village Konoha.
No one has the capability to protect the village from every single threat. Not even Naruto himself nor the other kages. They just protect it from what threats are directly in their way at the time and if they're able to affect the situation.

And that's why I think of Itachi as a clearly overrated character, but then again that word seems to be somewhat overused a little since there are some clowns who think its fine to just throw it around mindlessly. :hmm:

I don't find him to be overrated at all from a characterization standpoint and appreciate him for not being perfect, omniscient, being able to handle everything unrealistically, etc. His flaws are realistic and refreshing, not the typical forced shounen ones.

Although he may've been pretty sharp in analysis at times during battle, Itachi was not very good at decision making during battle as he failed to subdue the major villain(Obito) while he succeeded against Orochimaru, causing him to leave Akatsuki.

As established in this thread- he didn't even have the raw power to take down Obito anyway.

Sure every major character lived and followed orders throughout, Itachi was a different case as he could not really think for himself and actually distinguish between right and wrong. You could say because of this, he was indirectly the cause of Konoha's destruction and manipulation/exploitation of his brother by major villains. :eww:

He made his own decisions. That is thinking for one's self. He also does know the difference between right and wrong- that is blatantly obvious. He admits some of his actions were wrong and that Konoha's system is less than ideal, while also acknowledging his clan's and his own arrogance.

In regards to right and wrong- he just didn't loop people into molds. Never saying "this shinobi is 100% evil regardless of reasons". He was open-minded and understood people.

Maybe so, but despite everything, I believe the evidence was too weak to justify his crimes. U_U

Because it was justified and not empty hype unlike what most other characters received.

Him being a prodigy was never justified because prodigies rarely make foolish mistakes jeopardizing their own life along with others. Now the only Uchiha I can think was more of a prodigy, is Madara since firstly he lived through a period of turmoil and suffering(so it was more justifiable), he physically skilled able to take on opponents well older than him and even had the right mind set of seeking peace(and stuck to that ideal). Even if his method of pursuing peace was wrong, he was someone who followed the principles and ideas off a sacred tablet and did it all on his own while preparing ahead and setting up plans if the original failed. :hmm:

Shisui died at an older age. Itachi was just 21 when he died.

I already mentioned, I was referring to the screen time here. :|

He protected Sasuke and the village during his lifetime. Also preventing a war in his younger years which led to the shinobi world being at peace overall for his lifetime as well.

No he did not because Orochimaru was highly instrumental in his plans and succeeded in capturing Sasuke as well as causing havoc in Konoha and this occurred during Itachi's life while he was in Akatsuki. It's all in the manga as well as the anime for proof during part 1. The incident lead to the 3rd Hokage's death and Oro's successful exploitation of Sasuke resulting in the formation of his snake cursed seal which Itachi had to remove later on. Itachi came with Kisame to check up on Konoha, after it's invasion but he was too late for the damage had already taken place. Already that is two failures and during his life and the undeniable proof is right there. U_U

That wasn't his job. Since when are younger brother figures supposed to protect older brother figures? It's not his fault that Shisui decided to naively go behind his back and stop the coup... only to lose his eye and fail miserably.

Oh well maybe Sasuke shouldn't have helped Itachi during the battle against Kabuto then and gone to the battlefield after Naruto then? :| Itachi probably would've been subdued in the cave and under Kabuto's control all over again after rewriting the seal. That would've meant Sasuke would've remained a villain then. Shisui did what was best for the interest of himself as well as the Uchiha and he would've succeeded without a single life being lost, if it wasn't for that fuking Danzo. Danzo was seemingly in control of the situation from the shadows and manipulated Itachi with his tense words after stealing Shisui's eye thus resulting in a massacre. U_U

Sasuke is his own person. Not a puppy. People live and learn, this is a part of life. Itachi cannot do every single thing for Sasuke, this is not possible nor could something like this be averted.

But Sasuke was just a kid back then and it was Itachi's job to protect him as he lived by that oath. Itachi was also known to always keep an eye on Sasuke. Obviously your response is careless just because he's your fave.

No one has the capability to protect the village from every single threat. Not even Naruto himself nor the other kages. They just protect it from what threats are directly in their way at the time and if they're able to affect the situation.

Same reply as above^ It was his job to protect and he wasn't even there. He was apart of an organization that would constantly keep track of all villages with tailed beasts and yet he was unaware? Again, a failure of naming him a prodigy. :eww:

I don't find him to be overrated at all from a characterization standpoint and appreciate him for not being perfect, omniscient, being able to handle everything unrealistically, etc. His flaws are realistic and refreshing, not the typical forced shounen ones.

His flaws are impetuous and worthy of valid criticism. His character was decieving and unstable. The mistake was to name him a prodigy and to make it out as if he was perfect at everything, when in reality he was not and failed miserably. U_U

[/spoiler]

Yah and all of that was what was witnessed afterwards when he gradually began revealing the truth as an Edo tensei. However, my point still stands as he was that sort of person during his lifetime. A truly overrated character indeed and your probably can't see this because of you're ignorance. Well, that's not my problem in the end. :hmm:

Because of Kamui and he was smart to be cautious. Itachi has never been the shinobi to go out with guns blazing.

Even though he had Blaze release :(
