Her Part I appearance was just filler. Considering only canon material, there really wasn't any chemistry between her and Gaara; she's just another one of his fangirls.

Who says that he doesn't have a wife, and if it is not Matsuri? The kages don't take their wives everywhere they go, you only seen the relationships of those that lived inside of the leaf villages, not the other villages. Don't forget the girls were going crazy over him.
