Infractions are the 'punishment' of the site if you don't follow the Forum Rules. It is a permanent record that remains connected to your account. It can only be seen by you and the staff.
Also, if you check the PM you got, it's actually a Warning, warning are like infractions, however they aren't worth any points so they don't really do anything but warn the member. You got a warning instead of an infraction because you're a fairly new member, that's just us being considerate.
