Because he failed in his first mission he had to formulate a new plan since his biggest asset at the time was taken from him.When itachi came on the scene it gave him the chance he was looking for.He wasn't taking all the uchiha alone he needed some kind of help.And what is better to take down the uchiha then a genius uchiha ?

+ rep he was the leader of the mist as well at this point in time.The majority of those who became akatskui members grew up in during third shinobi world war.Also he had to manipulate nagato.He probably would of taken nagato with him to kill the uchiha but itachi came along and helped in exchange for leaving konoha alone.Then once again obito had to wait this time it was for itachi to die.If not he could of been a really nasty thorn in the side then he already was

Killing out the uchiha wasn't exactly high on his priority list...Obito has no beef with the uchiha , Madara does... So he either did it to maintain his image as being Madara when Itachi asked, or did it as a kind of favor for the late Madara
