Why did Naruto eat Iruka's letter....??

When One goes off to war unexpectedly for a period of time unknown....it's hood to get at least a little fiber in the system





It was more like keeping his words as a promise, or a way to have it on him since it would eventually fall off in battle.

Still, why did he actually ate it or swallowed it? I mean he could just put Iruka's paper on his pocket.
