[Discussion] Why did Kurama save Naruto in the past?

That's an opinion, not a fact. I think he also changed his mind when he made Itachi an anti-hero after first establishing him as an incredibly immoral and ruthless villain. Or when he decided to change the theme from hard work will get you ahead to destiny. Watch Naruto vs. Neji after you know Naruto's father is one of the most powerful ninjas ever. Neji's philosophy explains why he lost. Kishimoto changed his mind about the themes.
Thus, there's a pattern of him changing his mind. Kishimoto does not plan things out since this comes out weekly, as also evidenced in all the deus ex machinas that have saved Naruto and Sasuke.

What the hell do you think he had in mind before than.. and that minato was naruto's father was obvious from the start, if you think kishi fantasized that along the way i don't think anyone here can take you serious.

He at most changes his mind about minor stuff.. but he had the rough outlines of the entire series since he started in 1999

If he had let Naruto die in the past (when Naruto and Kurama were not friends yet), than Kurama would be revived somewhere and be free right?

Why did he save Naruto if he wanted to be free?

He didnt knew about the revival part?
He cared about Naruto and didnt want to let him die?

(I am not talking about today's episode, I am talking about Kurama helping out Naruto in general, before they became friends).

At difference of humans in the times of War after the Bijuus creation, Kurama learned about the human malice and the hatred generated, about the human foolishness, their autodestructive nature.

Naruto was different... Kurama firstly wanted to take over Naruto using his loneliness as a weakener trigger so Kurama could be free, but then he realized Naruto was someone which deteremination was greater than his hatred even with all the burdens and pain Naruto was carrying... Kurama had the hope that Naruto was the one who would bring the peace to the world after Naruto met the other bijuus. The only difference between Kurama and the Bijuus was basically that Kurama needed proof of Naruto's potential to become the next Sage, someone who needed determination to not lose hope, to follow a path and not to get carried away like most of the people of the Uchiha Clan, like Madara and Obito.

my problem wasn't that is the Fourth was his father. My problem was the themes completely changed. You are right, however, that the Fourth being his father was obvious.
I see the Itachi that didn't object (or react at all) to Kisame's suggestion of cutting off Naruto's legs as different from the Itachi who befriends Naruto. There's also Itachi snapping and threatening a couple Uchiha, but now Itachi is a pacifist and never gets angry. (edit: Maybe there was character development from his time before the massacre to Part 1, but it wasn't explored. Thus, I can't evaluate it.) Even if you don't buy that argument. there's still very little foreshadowing. For awesome foreshadowing of a character's true intentions see Snape in Harry Potter. Itachi is no Snape. What do I think Kishimoto had in mind for Itachi originally? For him to stay a villain.
Also, go ask Kishimoto is not a valid refutation of any of my points.
Also, Kishimoto said in interviews he originally planned the Akatsuki to have very little human characteristics but he changed his mind. See the Naruto wikia's article on Zetsu for source.
Moreover, anyone writing the same story for over a decade on a weekly basis would change their minds at least a couple times. Better ideas are always coming.
