Why did Hiruzen get so scared when Orochimaru summoned Minato

The fact that Hiruzen was able to stop an Edo from being summoned by the summoner is a testament to his legendary skill. No other character has countered Edo Tensei in such a way.

Not trying to take Hiruzen's shine, but the summoning failed since you can't summon souls taken in the Reaper's belly. Kabuto explained that to Obito when Obito asked about ET.

However, even if Minato's Edo failed, Hiruzen stopped the coffin at the time. If Oro had summoned the coffin, he would have seen Minato had failed.

Hiruzen didn't stop the Edo Tensei technique, he stopped the SUMMONING (albeit a summoning of a failed experiment) midway. That in itself is an unbelievable feat.

This raises the question; why didn't Oro use the Uzumaki mask to summon Minato at the time? My guess is that he only gained the knowledge after Shippuden started.

Ah, I get what you're saying now, that is a pretty good feat actually. I don't think Orochimaru knew Minato sealed himself via RDS since he didn't reside in Konoha then so I think it's a safe assumption to say he didn't learn until Pt 2 as well.
