Days is a generally accepted translation, but the Arabic word used to define days (“أَيَّامٍ” ayyāmin) in above verses, is actually translated as Epochs. (No seriously! Click this link for the dictionary meaning of the word), this is defined from the root word for day (yaum), the the word yaum with its variations, (Epochs, Periods, Days, Today) is used in Qur’an a total of 410 times but ayyāmin is only used in those particular cases when the creation of the earth or the heavens is being discussed (another variation of ayyāmin, used to define 2 periods is also used but I refrained from quoting as not to confuse).
In geochronology, an epoch is a subdivision of the geologic timescale that is longer than an age and shorter than a period. We are currently living in the Holocene Epoch of the Quaternary Period.
