Why are the Anbu so underrated?

By your logic the Anbu should have been at a Kage level or beyond it? because that's what the Akatsuki members are.

The Anbu are weaklings...both Asuma and Kakashi are Jouni, but they are not at the same level..just because Itachi and Orochimaru were in the organization doesn't mean they can be as strong as them.

Dude the majority of the members in ANBU are kage level. come on oro, danzo, kakashi, itachi, and maybe others that we dont even know about. wasnt minato and jiraiya in ANBU

i think the anbu focused more on information gathering (intel) or something like that. If you had noticed they mostly appear on scenes to report to the kage's and on spying to enemies.....

No im pretty sure he is above ANBU even more above a Kage he is a Sannin, remember that

Most ANBU members get killed fairly easily when they appear.
I'm sure the ANBU are powerful (I mean, even Itachi and Kakashi were members at one point, and they're both strong shinobi), but they get killed off almost immediately when another character appears.

The closest we got to see in terms of strong ANBU members were when they tried to kill Pain's dog summon in the anime. That, I'll admit, was pretty impressive.

its not that there underated. i mean take a look at itachi he used to be a anbu. and he was extremely badass. i guess hiding in the shadows is really all they know how to do. they are meant for assasination. but most other ninjas are skilled in a variety of styles. and i also guess minor side characters are supposed to lose. especially the anbu.

Let's see ANBU fails.

- failed to protect the 2nd Hokage -> He died.
- failed to realise Orochimaru was using people for testing -> lots of shit
- failed to protect Minato's wife and got fodderised by Tobi.
- failed to protect Hiruzen and looked like retards.
- got fodderized by Kabuto while guarding Sasuke.
- the 2 strongest got fodderized by Tobi again

The way I see it, the Anbu should be equal to the Akatsuki but no they kinda die like cockroaches. For crying out loud, orochimaru, Danzo, and Itachi were inductees of this secret organization within Konoha. Also why arent they fighting in the war? Kishi is doing some serious trolling on this one

The Anbu´S ARE SO UNDERRATED because:

They keep getting killed easily.

Though said to be fatal, they´ve proved harmless against classy opponents even, in huge numbers.

ANBU´s rely their reputation on myths, such as "the white fang,", "kakashi", "sai", "danzou", "yamato".... currently the are non famous characters that we know of, belonging currently to ANBU.

Though being introduced as an elite force, so far, they´ve only shown the darker side of Konoha than an actual elite organization. (Iwouldn´t rely on Konoha, the entire Uchiha clan was wiped out by one guy so I dunno)
