agreed. There are alot of "smart" characters in naruto i think most are picking shika because thats what he emphasized as a character is ability to think.shikamaru no doubt but think about kakashi itachi and minato are many optoins man

itachi was a genius and he was a true gift to the uchiha clan. he had already mastered the sharingan at a very young age and he became a anbu sqaud leader and the age of 13!!
he made sasuke into a true avenger so he would be the one to take down madara instead of him and evrey move he made was the right descison. even madara said itachi still amazes him even at death.
that gift he gave naruto could be HUGE plot in beating sasuke and bringing him back towards the light, i can go on and on about itachi he's just a true genius.
Shikamaru. Why is this even a question when Kishimoto tells you he is the smartest!
Shikamaru is the easily the smartest Naruto character. No one has his potential with intelligence. Not even his father who should be considered the smartest character right now. He is the one character who Kishi always stresses his intelligence above others. Even Kakashi passed the torch to him during the Zombie Twin Arc. Very few people in the history of the world were thought to have an over 200 IQ. So Kishi used a real world stat to show that no one can pass Shikamaru. But his laziness will make sure he never reaches his potential.
For a comparison look at the current databook stats with intelligence and cunning. Neji is a 3. Sasuke is a 3.5. Shikamaru had a 5 at age 12! He could have been a chuuin at age 5 if he wasn't so damn lazy. He makes Neji and Sasuke, two intelligent characters, look like idiots.
Shikamaru's over 200 IQ says otherwise. Shikamaru is on a different level than Itachi. 200 plans in a second. Can think 10 moves ahead of you. Always making the right choice. He is a freaking computer. The only thing that keeps him from being a god-like character in Naruto is that he is lazy as hell and has no ambition. Characters like Itachi, Madara, Minato care. Shikamaru doesn't. The guy never trains a second! Other geniuses like Neji and Sasuke also work hard. Shikamaru never has to and yet he still is thought of as a Hokage candidate. All based on how smart he is.

i agree shikamaru is extremely smart. He beat HIDAN A S-CLASS NINJA WHOS IMMORTAL!
but pakura i always believed itachi was the smartest, that gift he gave naruto could change the outcome of naruto's most IMPORTANT fight ever against sasuke uchiha, and that was his main objective to bring sasuke back to konoha and him to become hokage and he needs alll the help he needs to bring sasuke back and i believe that gift will make sasuke come back to naruto because i believe in itachi and he didnt just die to give his powers to sasuke he needed someone to trust and gave that gift to naruto. itachi's intelligence and intelect is just outstanding, he can predict the future so accuratley which makes him unbelievabley bright. you cant say shikamaru is on another level than itachi they are not far from each other.
