Think you're underestimating the gift itachi gave him. wasn't just MS, he gave him a second chance to reuse his eye sight, gave sasuke a reason to get stronger at all cost and it's speculated theory fluttering around that amaterasu sasuke uses is the same one itachi planted into him.

sasuke came a long way.

kakashi = taught him chakra control, and chidori
orochimaru = gave him curse seal and kirin and orochimaru himself lol.
itachi = MS, EMS, amaterasu(theory), thirst to get stronger(hatred), that epic kunai trick itachi does.
