The Big L 98 freestyle is amazing, the man has an amazing flow and great lyrics.

Big L is amazing, and was a great emcee. But the '98 "Freestyle" with Jay-Z wasn't a freestyle at all. The lyrics he spit were off his first album. Most people don't know that.

That being said, the lyrics were still sick and it's not like he tried to claim it was a freestyle. The stretch & Bobbito show was used to drop verses, rarely would emcee's freestyle on the show.

However, there are/were quite a few radio shows in which rappers would drop freestyles, the Wake Up Show with Sway & Tech being a good example.

THIS is a sick freestyle though:

^Cat could spit. Just check his battles if you're not convinced. There's a reason many consider him among the best battlers/freestylers of all time, along with MC JUICE, Sage Francis, Murs, ect.

The Big L "freestyle" was awesome, but I was referring to this one.

This however is also pre-written.

There's this interview with Big Daddy Kane, one of the greatest MC's of all time, in where he states that a freestyle is not actually made off the top your head, it is actually a rap that is free of style, meaning that you are not talking about a particular subject/matter but rather just bragging about yourself. The term "Off the dome" is what people are referring to as that is when you make rhymes up on the spot.

Dr. Dre, old Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Tupac.

I hate most rap from the last decade, I like Eminem and 50 Cent though
