well truthfully, in terms of pure power and distruction rate, i would have to say pain. so i guess i would call pain the "strongest". but madara has that evil ability to talk to someone and get into their head and twist their thoughts, which is why he is the ultimate villain. kinda like what he did to sasuke. madara is the most dangerous character in akatsuki though because of this.

If Madara didnt have control of Zetsu whether it be Sharingan Mind-rape or Blackmail by holding his precious bonzai tree hostage. i firmly beleive zetsu has amazing abilities that could very well make him the strongest ex. He can be literally untraceable, can absorb chakra and administer to allies/self, and the split personality factor which helps him see situations on oppisite sides of the table. And obviously he is one of Madara's extremely valuble war assests. however his alliegence is pledged to Madara as of now. So until we witness Sasuke's newfound abilities Madara holds the title of Akatsuki's Ringmaster.

but in response to the question. in all honesty, i'd say Kisame or Itachi. Madara is a coward. he's done nothing so far, just played with everyone.

Madara is a beast. There is no competition. The way he made easy work of Konan and then how determined he is to win the war. It's obvious. Pain was always being controlled. He was just raw power or muscle.

As stated above, Madara is a good cantidate for the strongest member of the Akatsuki (besides being the true leader of it).

But so are Kakuzu (with his ability to live with several hearts and use different Jutsu elements), and Kisame (his monstrous chakra and Samehada create a noble team).

I dont think any Akatsuki members woulda been able to beat Itachi or Madara, so it'd have to be one of those two. :s Madara is supposedly not at full power, nor was Itachi so who knows. I'm sure Itachi coulda killed everyone if he took Sasuke's eyes.

With those two aside the strongest would be Kisame. Samehada would drain the chakra receivers of Pain's bodies and Nagato 1 on 1 with his own body would probably get owned. Kakuzu could probably put up a better fight but there's no getting around that sword unless he can pull it away with his minions.

I say the strongest member of akatsuki is pein but after that is madara, itachi kisame, konan(thats right i said konan), and kakuzu.
