Kabuto Yakushi is the most deep and interesting character. The identity crisis is a big one.

But Obito Uchiha's mental state is explored and unraveled in a way I really wasn't aware a writer like Kishimoto was capable of. Obito Uchiha's psychological defeat was high art in a low art shonen manga. It was extraordinary.

Obito-I like his story and its complicated how he became the way he was. I feel bad for him really
Itachi- Itachi was...the snape of Naruto. He truly is probably the best written character now that i think about it. Everything he did, though he did screw up Sasuke a little more, was truly honorable and heroic.
Maddy- Pretty well written. His ideals are great, but his method of going about it is rather forceful. Kishi really knows how to portray the complications of society, war, environment, peace, and such through his bad guys so to speak
Nagato- Same with him as above, he just wanted peace but had a different way of getting it. His words were some of the best contemplation words i have ever heard (about how revenge breeds hatred and more revenge)

Kakashi by a mile

His tragic storyline and old darkness makes him a likable character ,but he doesn't ***** about it and has a mysterious vibe. To top it off he has amazing attacks and amazing quotes

Itachi's story had such a twist to it that he has to be the best written character. Everyone went through Part 1 and the first half of Part 2 thinking he was the most villainous guy in the series, apart from Orochimaru, only to turn around and have him die for his village. I don't agree with hype, but based on how well he was written and played out in the series, it has to be him. U_U
Couldn't have said it better my self:itachi

Itachi: In Part 1 we thought he was the villain and hated him and in Part 2 we knew how much he respected the Will of Fire and loved his brother.

These polls always irritate me, I can't fathom how Itachi has the most votes. Bias aside, he's really a horribly written character.

Danzo for the following reasons:

1) Strongest Wind user so far, not to mention he could use Izangi and had Shishui's eye. Simply said he is one of the strongest ninja in the manga, personally I believe the only reason he lost was because plot demanded him to, also lets not forget that he was holding back against Sasuke because he needed to reserve energy to fight Tobi afterwards, in the end it seems he held back too much and payed the price for underestimating Sasuke.

2) Completely selfless, everything he does is for the betterment of the village. He even commits suicide without hessitation in order to prevent Tobirama from getting Shishuis eye. Its not easy to have that kind of conviction to do whatever it takes to protect the village.

3) His relationship/envy towards Hiruzen, "You were the leaf, showered in sunlight. While I was the root, obscured in darkness." These are his dying words and they speak volumes to the kind of man Danzo was. Always striving and fighting to prove himself to be better than Hiruzen. Not to mention that he named his Special ANBU force "Root", which means that this feeling of resentment towards Hiruzen has been something eating him up for quite sometime, possibly even before Tobirama made Hiruzen Hokage when they were kids.

He is one of the few characters that is earnestly and wholeheartedly complicated. He is a bad guy for all the right reasons. He has given up his concious, emotion and personality for the sake of protecting the village and in return he is given no thanks, and he doesnt care, he didnt do it for gratitude, he did it because it is the right thing to do. Most other characters feel one dimensional.

People only hate him because he made their favorite character cry.

Danzo, Jiraiya, Itachi, Sasuke, Kakashi

I think all of these characters are well written, a bit more realistic and believable compared to other Naruto characters. Also, they all have very interesting storylines. Sasuke had good character development throughout the series.
