I think the saddest was that Naruto's parent's weren't with him for the most part of his life.

The most sad episodes I remember are...

When Choji comes close to dying in the Sasuke Retrieval Arc.

During the Chuunin Exams in Garaa vs Lee. When Gai steps in to save Lee. And then when he finds out Lee can't be a ninja anymore. That was heart wrenching.

When Lady Chiyo dies.

When Jiraiya-sama dies and Naruto finds out.

When Hiruzen Sarutobi dies.

When Asuma dies and Shikamaru deals with the loss.

Tbh, I don't have much sympathy for Itachi's story and Sasuke. I would like it but Sasuke ruined it by going against his wishes. Other than that all I can say is that was a big burden he carried and no one could have dealt with it with as much grace as him.

i agree with you, jiraiyas story was pure failure. he couldnt help as his favorite student as he died. he couldnt save his friend as he left the village and he couldnt change the fate of his first student who ended up killing him and had to watch his favorite students son fail time and time again. his books never took off, he never was a sought after person like oro and sasuke were, he was just jiraiya. only when he died he found happiness in HOPING naruto would make the right choice and keep the virtues he instilled after the training jiraiya overlooked. i think jiraiyas story is incredibly sad but alot of fans overlook it because of the more interesting blood battle with itachi and sasuke where we knew the end result before the battle happened: sasuke kills itachi. i think jiraiyas story was a mystery and thats what made it interesting, like naruto, he was a nothing turned into a legend by hardwork, yet he still lived with all these hardships and hoped to change the world. bravo jiraiya, bravo

in this thread i'll have to disagree with the fact of itachi having the saddest story...i think naruto has it because for 12 whole years he was hated by all people of konoha and he never got to know what a parent's love is...plus he didnt know why he was hated so i guess he must have spent endless hours wondering why
