So, I was thinking about my favourite characters from recent anime I watched and I noticed a pattern - I almost always prefer the bad guys or grey characters over the good guys doesn't matter if it's Bleach, Naruto, Fate/Zero, Hakuouki, Hunter x Hunter etc.

It was already like that when I was a kid,
Transformers: I liked the combaticons
Yu-gi-oh: I liked Malik and Yami (who would be considered grey I guess?)
Dragonball Z - Vegeta
And so on.

The only series I remember that I watched as a Kid and where I liked the protagonists are Dragonball (until Vegeta hit the stage in Z), Digimon and Turtles. Nowadays the only series the only Anime where I liked the Protagonist is Kenshin but that guy also had a dodgy past.

I don't know why I prefer those characters. I mean, I'm not a bad person, I don't wish evil on anyone yet I still prefer the bad guys... pretty weird I guess ^^.

So which side of the coin do you favour? Or is it completely mixed for you? Do you think there is a reason for people developing a habit for either the good, grey or the bad side?

The evil or grey characters are much more interesting most of the time.

I don't follow any particular pattern

I can't say for sure If I like black or light characters
the factor is the personality, development and the depth

I like grey characters, I'm not into overly evil character that get off from crushing other dudes balls, but I also don't like happy go characters that just want to stick their noses into everyone's business for no bloody reason, I mostly prefer characters that have a unique excitement to them

Well, if we agree that Sasuke was on the grey side for the most of the series, I'd choose the grey side, but now he's on the light side. And my favorite characters had always been Seto Kaiba, Jesse Anderson and Jack Atlas (from the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise which you mentioned), so I guess I prefer the grey side (cause I like 'dem deuteragonists). :)

I would consider Sasuke still grey, since we don't really know what he's up to.

OT: Completely argree with you guys, the grey/bad characters are usually more interessting.
No one who clearly said that he likes the good guys, guess we all are evil individuals Lol

@Bolden&Underlined part /This

And like a coin: it must have both sides. I prefer "the light side" (Goku from dbz is thr light) though i lean towards the Gray side.

Ofc, it don't like derpy bad guys either but it seems like the bad/grey characters usually have more substance. imo

This^^
As too much good or too much bad gets boring over time ...
Whereas grey characters always have some mysterious side to them
