To be honest I already find the overall idea of this thread misplaced. People seem to have an inherent dislike towards prequels and originally non-planned sequels because they find it too commercial and they tarnish the original movies. However realistically neither The Hobbit nor the Star Wars prequels are inherently bad. It's just that they have been tagged with the "we were only made because the original movies were so successful"-label and hence people 'have' to dislike them.
Personally though I always preferred the entire Tolkien franchise over the Star Wars one, but that's just because I fancy the historical/fantasy genre while I don't feel much for something futuristic as Star Wars.
I don't find the comparison between the two entirely legit though as LotR and The Hobbit are based on books and the latter was even written before the former, however the chronological order of their movie adaptations is the exact opposite. This created quite a weird situation as dishing The Hobbit because it was a prequel wasn't really a viable way to complain, so instead people complained about the length of the movie. The original book is really not that long and in normal conditions you would only make one movie out of a book of that length. But because of the success of LotR, they made three. So of course they added a lot of content that they either made up themselves or got from other parts of Tolkien's works. That's why there exists so much hate for The Hobbit, however in the end they are still very good movies: outstanding acting performances, exquisite props and amazing battle scenes with a touch of humor.
Star Wars on the other hand derives its status from the movies itself. The franchise is centered around them, so the prequels were as far as I know completely new content and had to be hated by default just because they were prequels that could never match up to the original ones. Honestly said The Force Awakens was pretty much just a copy of A New Hope, still everyone applauded for it. Why? Because it 'erases' the 'horrible' sequels.
Rather than the prequels being judged themselves as movies, they are being judged by the external conditions they appeared in. I seriously wonder if for example the SW prequels were never made whether The Force Awakens would have received that much positive reactions.
The Hobbit trilogy is objectively worse. But people love to bandwaggon against the Star Wars Prequels, to the point that they don't see the good aspects.
*subjectively worse as in your subjective opinion it is worse and likewise you have people who bandwagon against the Hobbit series to the point they completely neglect its good points.
