First theory ever from my part.
"Ever since "humans" were given form, they have fought each other and walked in a world of war. The earth was stained with blood, and as if it were absorbing that blood for nourishment, the Shinju took root in the earth. Eventually the Shinju beared a single fruit, and a certain clan came from another world seeking that fruit: the Ootsutsuki clan. Kaguya, leader of the Ootsutsuki, ate the fruit and became the progenitor of all chakra, and with her absolute power brought peace to the world in an instant."
"After she was defeated Hamura took command of the clan to watch over the Mazou, and the few Ootsutsukis remained departed to the moon, to be never seen again"
Kaguya's main ability was that of her Rinnesharingan, Amenominaka. With this she could change dimensions around her, for a total of six. Only she possessed this power, the head of her clan.
As we know, in the lava and ice dimensions were two interesting things: castles. And here we go, the reason i made this thread. As we know the clan came from another world, and everything connects.
I think that the six dimensions were the places where the Ootsutsukis lived (thus the castles present there), which they abandoned when they departed for the human dimensions, aka the Earth. Maybe there were developed and big cities in these dimensions, but leaving them abandoned for thousand years eventually lead them to fall and decay. Who else could live there, if not beings like gods as the Ootsutsukis. Not even the strongest humans, as Naruto and Sasuke, could survive in there, yet the clan lived in there prior to the growth of the most ancient thing in the human world, the Shinju.
TL;DR: The Ootsutsukis lived in the dimensions that Kaguya could control prior to departing for the Earth
