As you grow older, you gain more jutsu, and more experience. In your prime, you can move more freely and have slightly more chakra.
It dosen't make a difference.
Hiruzen was meant to be the strongest hokage, but Kishi changed his mind and has been clearly shifting that role to hashirama.
