What's the purpose of chakra/black rods in your opinion.

It's purpose is to complement dojutsu (Rinnegan/Sharingan). Chakra rods allow the user to disrupt an opponent's chakra and can paralyze the body (like genjutsu). It also grants the user control over the opponent's nervous system (corpses able to walk, talk and fight).

Grants enhanced control over chakra. (control over bijuu chakra using 6 paths) :yeah:

Also, anyone with Kaguya/Madara's skill (erhm Sasuke) can create their own version of black zetsu and therefore manipulate their opponent's will using the chakra rods. (Madara did that to Obito for rinne tensei)

Sasuke can not use or create black rods, if anything it is not a rinnegan technique:

As you can see old Madara did not have the rinnegan, he was synced to the Gedo mazou like Obito did.

Nagato later on gets implanted by such upon the summoning of Gedo mazou.

The only reason why the black rods control or disturbed ones chakra is because the user inserts their chakra into the opponent.

I'm pretty sure Sasuke did that with his sword too.
