So I've been trying for awhile now to get into One Piece. I read the manga, got somewhere around where Usopp was introduced and just couldn't find any reason to continue. Then a little while later I tried the anime, didn't make it very far either - only a few episodes to be honest.

When I heard about Pirate Warriors 3, I started looking into it. When I found out that the story mode began at the very beginning of the manga and continued all the way through some of the most recent chapters [at least at the time of it's release], I figured I'd give the game a shot - I can get into a game, as they're interactive. If I couldn't get at least slightly interested/invested in the story through this game, then I'd just give up on One Piece entirely.

Now Im assuming this game is fairly accurate to the source material - at least as far as the main plot points go. Then again, I really wouldn't know. Anyway, where I am in the game is my ship just flew up a water spout and we are now flying upwards towards a city in the sky. If that's still a little vague, after a little research that lands me somewhere around chapter 237 - A fair amount of plot progression, had I read this all through the manga.

Im enjoying the game, because again it's a video game and It's a lot easier for me to be engaged with what's happening when I personally have to interact with it. However, I can't say that Im all that invested in the story so far. That may be because Im playing a game, and maybe this game doesnt do the narrative justice (though to be frank, I think I get the gist of things just fine so far).

So I ask all of you; if you're a fan of One Piece, why are you? And at what point did you get hooked? Have I played my way through the point where most people get hooked - thus theres just no hope for me? I intend to finish the game, because again I am enjoying the game, but as far as the story goes if I had to return the game tomorrow and never look back I really don't think Id miss it all that much.

The appeal to me is probably that the characters are actually natural, opposed
to tons of manga where you'd see characters saying weird shit like it's completely scripted.
Also you get more out of the characters, even ones that you only see for a short while, the manga
may get repetitive but the stories/motivation differing for villains/allies the crew comes across makes up for it.

I've never found the series interesting either. But for some reason Goku likes it... :wut:

Imagine Naruto with a highly interesting plot line delivered in juicy tidbits that combine the notion of adventure, dreams & romanticism, moderate to decent fights from lower classed individuals that are packed with monstrous feats with the occasional teaser from the universes apex. Add this to this an underlying context on the nature of human freedom, selfishness and greed as observed from the lens of a pirate crew consisting of a gullible yet lovable albeit milked shounen MC trope that earned Goku admiration. However, this is just but a portion of the appeal. There are unique character designs & great characterizations of everyone from fodder to main protagonists. Every single person who appears on the show has a role which they play and there are never canned for the sake of the main story. Nope, every one gets their dues and you get to appreciate whatever change that takes place. The world building might not be unique at first glance but on introspection those familiar with geograhy and hisory will be mesmerized by the extent in which the mangaka attains his inspiration. The series aims to immerse you into this rich universe and you journey alongside this rag tag bunch as the unofficial nakama. For **** sake you cry when Usopp's you know who receives the Viking send off. Due to this Oda is meticulous and very consistent at no single point will you find yourself questioning why the establishes rules are breached.

EDIT: The problem with OP is people go in expecting it to live to other shounens and be jam packed with adrenaline and action from the get off. OP is more story oriented & Oda goes to great lengths to capture this side of it.

I hate one piece because Luffy is so annoying. I stopped reading the manga after Doffy got owned
Hmm, well, you still got far away in the plot before doing so (if you really did). Why not drop it before if you find luffy "stupid"?

OP (no puns intended): I got into one piece in what, like the beginning of 2014 i think and I am now caught up to it. I'll say this, It takes a little while for someone to get hooked i think. If by arlong park (the case for me), you still aren't hooked, then I guess you should give up altogether. It was only at this arc that i was totally hooked to it and still am today even though it tends to get quite slow/repetitive at times (like many shonens tbh).

What I like about one piece is the world that oda created. It feels real and it has alot of misteries surrounding it that are enough to grasp your attention/curiosity. Most characters are interesting and they all have a decent amount of progression, save maybe robin and nami post TS who seem to have been reduced to the inevitable fanservice role. I'm not hating on any of these two btw, i just feel that they have been left out tremendously after the time-skip but since the story is in no way reaching it's end anytime soon, there is still room for plenty of progression to take place for these characters.

The art style is one thing that rebutes alot of newcomers since it's not very traditional in terms of manga but it definitely has its charm and a few really cool shots. As a result, I like it for it's uniqueness.

I feel like I rambled too much.

In shorts, I like one piece.

I enjoyed it and caught up in two weeks. I'm getting the game for Christmas.

In my opinion I think people find it hard to get into it as it's very creative in a way there's no real main time era or.. species?
There's robots giants gnomes fish people in a land of old and new when most people find it more comfortable with just a main theme.
(If I've made that clear.. I think)

idk, mostly because my bro kept telling me to watch/read it, so im like, k wahtever, and reading 16 pages a week isn't really time consuming, but I finally stopped after that because I couldn't really stand luffy's personality and OPness anymore. I still keep in touch with the series, though.

I never tried to find a reason why I'm enjoying the series because there were many things which kept me hooked up into the series.
The gang of fools
The epicness in giving a SH*t about what others think of them.
In short, a complete package of enjoyment for me without losing the main focus of the story.
You just have to accept the characters they are because they are developed that way.

The writing is what gets me. It has a good use and balance of comedy, it builds intrigue well. I really got on board after the end of Alabasta, with Crocodile.

To be honest, it's not for everyone I guess. If you keep trying on different mediums, and really just want to understand the appeal, then I suggest you read the manga up at least until they reach the Grandline. There are a couple of really great arcs, and the background story of many of the characters. I mean, make a real effort to go at it.

Otherwise, just give up, it's not for you, go read something else man. Chances are, it's smaller

I've also noticed a lot of those trying OP now already know a good bit of it just from catching pieces here or there so it's not as good catching up since they know what to expect. I suggest anyone even considering trying OP stop reading any and everything OP related RIGHT NOW.
