Yeah your right, I guess I just see it as perception.
Someone could easily say I'm obsessed with this site because I go on it everyday. Or people that check there phones constantly.
Would I break up with someone because of that? No. But like you said, to each his own.
I guess to me it depends on the object and the intensity. Of course using examples that are mild and culturally accepted are clear exceptions...

It's just perception, someone constantly on their phones is extreme to me.
Not being able to go anywhere without it, always checking every hour.
I see that as an extreme obsession.
