For some reason when I listen to songs like this and think about the idea of life, I get depressed.

What thoughts make you depressed?

This is what makes me depressed:

The thought that gets me depressed the most is that we have a life which is such a precious and a rare thing. No amount of winnings can beat or even come close to what we have won when we were born. Life is such a precious thing and the thing that makes me upset is that we won't be able to utilise it to it's best potential.

Often it is said that the thing most people regret before their death is not what they have done but what they have NOT done. I want to meet and make the best personalities my friend. I want to find that perfect person to be with. Right now walking around in England, not too far from me there is a probably a girl that would be perfect for me but the chances of me meeting her are very low.

We may be born once or infinite times however what seems to be the truth is that we are here right now. The thing that also comes under not utilising life to its maximum is the idea that we are born in SUCH an amazingly vast universe yet we will all be chained to our planet until the day we die. All that potential, yet we can not utilise it and see it all.

Life isn't precious, that's an illusion human culture has cast to try and hide from the truth; that we are beings born out of chance - no true purpose or destination. We just make up ways to pass the days until we die. Ways to make us content, to *feel* purposeful and ways to subconsciously blind the truth from ourselves.

TL;DR - Just be happy as you can, focus on enjoyment and don't worry about what you might not be able to reach.

Thinking about the good old times in school (half a year ago) and having to accept the fact that i will never be in school again.

The thought that life will be serious from now on

If that's the case, then nothing on this planet has any meaning and was all chance.

OT: Being away from my loved ones, being medically retired out of the military after only a year in, among other things

i agree except that people didnt cast this to try and hide the truth. they never knew the truth to begin with. they were (and we still kinda are) way too arrogant to compare and see us as a regular part of nature. humans thought they were something special and they made themselves special by saying life is a gift from gods etc....

other than that i agree. although that doesnt make me depressed. the opposite actually. what makes me depressed however is the fact that there are still billions of narrow minded people out there who blindly follow ancient religions of some prehistoric jews....

I get depressed whenever I see my parents. They're at that age where their bodies are starting to degrade slowly. My mother's already showing signs of alzheimers (runs in the family), and she's not even 50 yet. When ever I see them suffering from minor things, like backpain, muscle soreness, etc. It reminds me of their mortality, that they're not going to be alive forever. It makes me think of their death, and the thought of their consciousness no longer existing on this planet depresses me.

Not being exactly like Superman so I can take flight and explore the vastness of space. The universe is so mesmerizing... but I'm stuck on a rock. Other than that, everything is peachy.

Just a few things.

  • One major thing being time.. and the thought that I will actually die one day. Once you die it's over and there's nothing you can do about it. Even if I find my life to be a piece of shit, I still like to breathe air and talk to some close people.
  • Seeing people in those long lasting committed happy relationships kinda makes me depressed because I know I will never get that.
  • Lack of self-confidence. I'm shit, and I'm constantly putting myself down because there are people who are better than me at a lot of things, and I feel like I'm not good at anything.
  • Jealousy. Some people are just born lucky and with good lives. Rich and wealthy from their parents and never have to work a day in their life, so when I see that it makes me depressed because I don't have that and never did have that.
  • Lack of talents. I have literally nothing I'm good at, so when I see people who can do so many interesting things it makes me depressed. What is my purpose? Why was I even born if I can't do anything? Was I born just to feel like shit?
  • I'm constantly thinking about the future and it makes me dejected because I will probably never achieve anything or be content before I die.
  • Currently I'm not happy. I'm in college but I don't feel like I'm doing anything with my life since I sincerely despise school and find it to be a complete waste of time. Even if I was to drop out, what else would there be for me?
  • I have no passions for anything. I am not motivated at all, so when I see people who know what they want to do with their life it makes me feel like I am wasting my life, which I am.

This. My mother is all i really have in this life and when she got into a car accident it was the first time that her death was a possibility in my mind. Then i came to the quick realization that we are all going to die eventually, changing the possibility into a reality. She didn't hit 50 yet so i'm not in the same boat as you, but knowing the day is going to come haunts me. Especially given the life she's had so far.Whittling away with only regrets.

Depression and anxiety (yes, they are different, but often intertwined) are typically caused by cognitive distortions, negative thought patterns, and negative self-talk. I seem to enjoy lists, so here we go:

1. Playing the victim. We have this notion that life should be fair, like there is some cosmic superstructure of fairness that interweaves throughout life, striving to find balance. Life is difficult and bad things happen to good people. As long as a person dwells on the past and lets it define them, they stagnate. Stagnation can feel depressing. No one is responsible for your change, but you.

2. Judgments. Monitor how often you judge yourself, others, and your environment. Just because something feels bad in the moment does not mean that it is going to be bad forever, and vise versa. Constant negative judgments can warp one’s worldview, even make them misanthropic. Constant positive judgments can leave one feeling disappointed or let down. Learn to accept things as they are without judging. Don’t cling to past experiences with people you know. Learn to experience every interaction with someone as you have never met them before.

3. Telling yourself things “should be, ought to be” a certain way. This is basically a judgment as well, and again a growing phenomenon where people think that equivalent exchange is a real law in physics. Happenings in life are what they are. When you tell yourself “I should be something else” then you are rejecting yourself in the present moment.

4. Not living in the present moment. The past and the future are entirely human philosophical constructs. All you really have is the eternal here and now. Sure, some planning is important to meet survival needs, but don’t let it detract from the present moment. Someone who cannot live in the present moment should never make plans, because you won’t be there to enjoy it. All things are temporary including sadness that you feel.

There are a lot of other examples, but they all fall into the same philosophy: Live in the present moment non-judgmentally and learn to accept things as they are, and not how you feel the world should be. You are not the same person you were yesterday, and you won’t be the same person you are now, tomorrow. Increasing your awareness of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and environment in a non-judgmental fashion is the only way to be who you want to be in that moment.
