Hello NarutoBase,
How are you all doing today? I have seen recently a string of threads of people asking what are the requirements to be a moderator. To be honest I do not know what the specifics are but what I can do is share some thoughts on what is required. I tell you all this from experience as a former mmo forum administrator.
For once to be a mod you have to be selected. Of course there is an application process but generally if someone is pushy to be a mod they are of the attention-seeking type which is a bad trait and a quality we readily ignore. But anyway let's go with a list. :3
1.) Time - As a first requirement you must have been here for some time. Most sites ask for applicants to be a member for about 6 months to a year. The longer you have been here the better you are oriented with the site and have a feel for your audience. Also the longer you are here the more well known you are and a better chance for the staff to asses your character/skills.
2.) Skills - What are you good at? For some forums, applicants are chosen for their skill in a specific area(s). There are some people who are really good at telling people what do to while others are able to express the concerns of the staff/members to others while some are really good at managing several tasks without little to no supervision. There are also several individuals who are very creative and/or refreshing and have great skills in the arts such as graphic art or drawing or as far as 3D animation.
3.) Maturity & Wisdom - These two skills go hand in hand IMO. This makes a big difference and often times can be a deciding factor. A mod is someone who can deliver the "message" without having resort to childish name calling or vulgarity. Of course based on the person there is probably some leeway but that is very rare and case by case basis.
No offense but hiring an idiot to be a mod is like asking a truck to run you over expecting it to miss you. :sy:
You must be able to handle stress and remain level-headed. The forum does not need anyone with a short temper who resorts to vulgarity at the chance of being teased/ridiculed. You should be able to take some criticism both from staff members and from members.
Also the applicant must not abuse their power or harass other members. Not only is it not ethical but not necessary. If you are an abusive member no one is going to listen to you and will result in people leaving this site (in a much larger portion).
4.) Reputation - This is miniscule but something that can't be overlooked. Applicants should have a good following and someone people respect and will listen to their opinion. No one would accept someone who is a repeat offender and has a bad history of delinquency.
------------------------
Every forum has different rules and requirements which are expected/required to be a mod.
Note: You are ASKED (hired) to be a mod. If you ask to be one you will more than likely be ignored and put in the "don't hire" list.
If you have any questions/concerns or would like to contribute to this thread please let me know via PM/VM. Thank you all for your time and hope to hear from you.
Rin
