-So I was thinking, what makes a good a Villian?

Characteristics:
  • Is it someone who wants revenge?
  • Someone who lost a loved one
  • A person who wants power
  • A sadistic mad man
  • Someone with no emotion
  • Is it someone who has nothing to lose?
  • Or someone who thinks their ideals and beliefs are right and everyone else is wrong.

Or is it a little bit of all these things? What do you think makes a good Villian, What do you like in a Villian???

Apparently oro is the best villain in naruto because he has a habit for stalking kids. Imo paedophiles in general are villains but that doesnt make a paedophile a good villain :scorps:.

Imo what makes a good villain is their personality
Hold no allegiance to anything
No emotions
Does not underestimate their a task or their rival

Most importantly Acknowledges art

Here's my view. To me,

  • He should have a solid background story. The writer should give him a solid reason as to why he is bad. It may be revenge, general hate, ambition or any of the characteristics you've mentioned. The point is that it should be compelling enough.
  • A good villain should have some really evil motives !!!
  • The guy should be creepy with his antics and thinking. A villain just cannot be mushy and sympathetic.
  • The writer should go deep into his psychology to show viewers/readers how sick and evil he is with his thoughts. A good villain's mindset should be more terrifying than his actions.
  • A villain should always have something up his sleeves. A good villain cannot be outgunned or outsmarted easily.
  • That villain should be a contrast to someone (the hero)
  • That villain shouldn't be strayed out of its path. Whatever the arguments and obstacles, he should keep going with his thoughts despite how despicable those thoughts are.
  • Apart from some of the above characteristics that I've listed, he could be an even badder villain if he abode some of these characteristics - egoistical, merciless, over-confident, unforgiving, corrupted, psychopathic, destructive, lust-ful or blood-seeking. All these embodies evilness and villainous forms.

My 10 Favorite Villains are:

1. Pazuzu from The Exorcist
2. Iago from Othello, by William Shakespeare
3. Satan from Paradise Lost, by John Milton
4. Hannibal Lecter from The Silence of the Lambs
5. The Joker from Batman
6. Aaron from Titus Andronicus, by William Shakespeare.
7. Orochimaru from Naruto, by Masashi Kishimoto
8. Voldemort from Harry Potter, by JK Rowling
9. Sharks from JAWS
10. Claudius from Hamlet, by William Shakespeare

someone who knows what they are doing and kills their enemy when they have the chance. The one that has an A-Z plan.. and the laugh totally.

Someone that just plain enjoys f***** with your mind and destroying everything you have just to see you suffer. Also they never seem to die and when you kill them they try to take you and everyone else out with them.

Just has to be a cynical person with bitterness towards some persons or aspects in ones own life. Usually this is caused by unfair treatment or trauma in ones past.

Examples:

Madara - uchiha was treated unfairly
Orochimaru - experienced the horrors of war with the most painful way when his parents died (trauma)

The rest just comes along the way, you know the killing, extortion and all that..you go deeper all the time. But there's always something bad happened in ones life that eventually pushes them to the "dark side".

Depends on the show. My favorite Buffy villain would be The Gentlemen, they take your voice, then come and cut out your heart when you can't scream or shout. But, I have other villains I like, Frank in Criminal Minds was amazing, because he killed for the fun of it, and if he wanted something, he made a plan good enough to get it.
For me a good villains is someone who thinks ahead and makes a good plan, and is willing to do whatever it takes to complete the plan. I think emotionlessness could ruin a villain, as there is no obvious drive for his actions.

Villains you can sympathize with are good. Like Kira, Nagato and even Madara.

Agreed.

But I also enjoy that batshit insane type of villain every now and then. You know, that type of person who'll kill your mother and kick your puppy just because he can.

The Joker?

i think a great villain is a person that can be selfish and strike fear into the hearts of his opponents.

Me! >:D

Lol. But seriously I don't know... Some of my favorite villains are Father from FMA Brotherhood, and Wrath also from FMA Brotherhood. I also liked Orochimaru villainous characteristics. And Dakseid from DC.
