Well i agree with you the rival often plays a big role about the character
for example in Ichigos case Its Grimmjow and he is important to Ichigos character

A sense of justice, or common sense at the very least

What a good main character needs is the same thing every character needs to be a good character in general. Characterization, development, clear world-view, ideals, beliefs, reasonings to their action, and fleshed out relationships with other characters of the story; be they positive or negative. As long as a character has these, it already gives them a possibility to be a main character of a story as the view on the story, how it all plays out and the different perspective on the topics it tries to discuss are all dependant on the characterization of the main character - which the story revolves around. The complexity of the main character just depends on how far the author's writting capability can go and how good is he at making other story elements clash with his mentality and reasonings.

Said character can be a hero, a murderer, selfish, kind, distorted, insane, etc. No matter what type of person the character is, the story and it's topics will or rather should be bended in order to be viewed from the perspective of it's main character. As long as the author of the story is able to write the person he wants his main character to be, characterize him fully and make his intentions, wishes, world-view, and beliefs clear and then bend the story in order to suit the world-view and the reasonings of the main character, that will make it good.

A good example of a great protagonist would be Emiya Shirou.
