I believe a good leader must have good instinct, intuition and tact. He/she must know the moments when it is necessary to take charge and lead from the front, without coming off as some sort of dictator and instead coming off as an inspiration. Conversely, they need to know when to be a little more laid back and listen to other members' opinions. They also need to be aware when a group member needs attention, or if they need to be left alone to contemplate things. It's also necessary to be a good mediator and be somewhat diplomatic, as if there are any conflicts amongst the group, you can bet your bottom dollar that you'll be involved eventually, and a part of the reconciliation process rests on your shoulders. A lot of what I've said requires good instinct- not all of it can be taught. That's what I think.
