As much as i dislike Micheif Maker, i think he is right for once.

It was a joke of an attempt to get Naruto by Itachi and Kisame. C'mon they knocked on his door! rather then just entering in, take him and be done with it.
Also, when they infiltrated the leaf village, instead of being on the move looking for Naruto...they stopped to get Tea! pretty much just asking to be spotted!

Whether it was Itachi's true intentions to capture Naruto or not, it was a half-ass effort. And that is fact.

Just after that tried to capture naruto, and being held by j-man appearance, sasuke poped in, and for some reason j-man allowed sasuke to run and try to hit itachi( even though he admit that it was wrong, and he had to stop sasuke and take control of the situation by himself).

Anyway, after that itachi used tskyomi on his brother, to motive and engorge him to stay aggressive nad keep working on his developing power.

And while we know, itachi has ms, not ems, so e can't mass use these eyes or he will turn blind, so he preferred to escape and avoid facing strong oppnantae like j-man.

1) Itachi was playing along with Akatsuki for quite a while, And he was part of collecting the tailed beasts, and his duty was to capture Naruto( which he tried). so i am sorry to point this out for you Fanboys, Itachi is not an Angel, he was a part of this organisation that captured and caused of death for many jinchrike, including Gara.

2)Kisame and Itachi did try to capture nartuo, and they were serious.

3)While all of this is working, Itachi already has his mind set to be killed by Sasuke in few years a head, after sasuske is growing up enough to take him down. so until this will happen, he has to reserve using his MS, otherwise he will get blind.

so this what happened:
as i stated in some previous posts, Kisame and Itachi tried to capture Naruto, and they tried to take his hands off, ( part of Itachi playing along with Akatsuki), but they get held in the final second by J-man, who broke the hypnosis Itachi made on a woman so he can get him away from Naruto.
Sasuke poped in, so Itachi used tskyomi on him, to re-motivate him,(keep in mind this happened before they start fighting with J-man), so we don't know if he would used tskyomi on J-man in the first place., but after just using it on Sasuke, then he wouldn't risk and use it again straight after that).

and as i said, Itachi already know that mass using for his MS is ganna blind him, and he can't take down J-man with a mere Sharngen, so he decided to retreat.

But they were way too nonchalant about it. They casually just knocked on Narutos door taking there sweet ol time like it was some kind of joke. I'm sure Itachi would of known when Jman broke the genjtsu he placed on that woman. It was Itachi's decision to retreat both times even when Kisame wanted to keep on going and fight it out. And if he REALLY wanted to capture Naruto like you said he does, don't you think he would of went all out despite the consequences of using his MS.

Everything leads to the fact that Itachi's true intentions were not to catch Naruto.
Also, it was confirmed that despite joining the Akatsuki and doing what he did, his real loyalty remained to the Leaf Village, it just adds on to to the fact that Itachi didn't want to capture Naruto in the first place.
