you have a rank as soon as you join... see the thing that says posts under your avatar? That is what your rank is based on. Once u get a certain amount of posts you go up a rank. And what ranks do is they determine how many elements you can have and what rank of jutsu u can use in the Role Playing section.

0=academy student
50=genin
100=chunin
400=special jounin
1000=jounin/anbu
1750=S rank ninja
3100=sanin
5200=kage

and i'm not sure what goes after that

Keep posting and you go up in rank. Thats how it works at the moment.

All the rules are stickied at the top of each of their respective section, the rank system is in the battle rules in the battle arena.
