The following is about the anime, not manga.

My favorite (The best anime for me): Death Note

Classic: DBZ

The world: One Piece

There are MANY great animes, like Death Note and FMA:B and so on, but I judge if the anime is my favorite by seeing how long it keeps me entertained.
Death Note, FMA and Code Geass, all great animes, but sadly no longer ongoing. Those series ended.

I've seen all they had to offer, (twice with FMA) and they don't offer anymore entertainment. While One Piece keeps giving me more entertainment every week.

I downloaded Code Geass and FMA and Death Note and I watched them over a week(a week each). Thats how long they've entertained me each.

As for One Piece, I wait for more every week.
When its wednesday, I'm waiting for a new One Piece chapter, not a new Naruto chapter. I just read Naruto when it comes out, but its rarely I'm waiting for a new chapter.

Every time I refresh the browser at *********** site, I'm doing it for One Piece.

Naruto for sure! Then...One Piece!

One Piece fans...don't deserve to join NB. U_U

Uh what?
We don't deserve to join NB?
We were here before you, so if someone is gonna leave, its gonna be you.

If One Piece fans didn't join NB, half of the staff and most of the members would be gone.
This place would be overflowing with kindergarten kids.

So think before you say dumb stuff like that.

Also, Naruto isn't even up there with the top.
It's a battle between One Piece and DBZ.
Unfortunately for DBZ, it is an old anime and no longer ongoing, while One Piece is growing every day.
So its only a matter of time till One Piece has surpassed DBZ. Imo, it has already surpassed it.
Pretty sure it surpassed it on sales 2 years ago. I can check.

Edit:
One Piece:
It enjoys a very high readership, with more than 250 million volumes of the series sold by 2011.

DBZ:
By 2007, this number had grown to pass 152 million in Japan and 200 million worldwide.

How come everyone on here has only seen Naruto, One Piece, and DBZ? I shouldn't say that's all you guys have seen, but if you really think those are the best anime's ever hten I can tell you don't leave your anime comfort zone much. NO one is even mentioning the other greats, here are some that are some other mainstream ones for you to consider.

Trigun
Samurai Champloo
Cowboy Bebop

Ever heard of any of these? They're epic. Try something new.

Seen Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop, but I wouldn't say any of them scale up to DBZ or One Piece for the sole reason because they aren't very long.
You cannot compare a 30 episode long series to a 600 episode long series.
You can, but the result will be very inaccurate.
I'm not saying its easy, but creating a 30 episode anime is much easier than creating a 700 + episodes long one. The quality of the 30 episode long is gonna be better per episode, but if you look at the overall entertainment each anime provides, the 700 episode long is gonna be better.

Just because an anime is long doesn't mean it's better. I'm big fan of DBZ myself and Naruto of course but the problem with series that are hella long is that IMO they get out of hand. I had to give up on OP for that reason even though I was in love with it, had to stop Naruto too for a while. All they do is just continue to dodge the overlaying conflict that got the series started and the one single thing allows for the series to keep going. I mean any of these series you can pick up at any point, watch 5-10 episodes, and have a pretty good grasp on what's happening. It gets redundant what you want to know what's going to happen and you like the characters so you keep watching. Doesn't make it better, just repetitive.

It's like comparing a short story to Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter books.
In my opinion, as long as the author keeps up the good work, the longer the better.

I feel like Bleach has fallen off and fallen down pretty far, and that Naruto is falling off too at the end of its story. I can't say for One Piece yet, since its still only half way there, but I like it more than any other anime I've seen, because of all the laughs, chills and sad stuff it has given me.

So then OP is your favorite anime. The question is what's the greatest and that means quality. Perhaps the author should have specified what the criteria is for the "greatest" but as for me, if I made a list of my favorite animes and then another list of animes that I thought were the best, the lists would be different. I think of art quality, emotional depth, plot and character development, but maybe I should consider popularity as well. But I'll reiterate that length does not equal quality. Look at twilight....
