Animal is just a term. If you think about it were animals too. We're just intellectually superior to all the other animals on earth.

Ignoring the fact that we are animals, and assuming that you're separating us from them just cause, I would say the difference is: A certain degree of intelligence sets us apart from most other animals, then from there we don't rely on survival alone. We have to ability to question anything and a curiosity and drive to learn more: naturally.
-Possibly through evolution/forced evolution other animals can do the same thing, who knows.

We have more shame, hence why we wear clothes and animals don't have any.

We have larger Egos, and thus miss the fact that Homo Sapiens is just a talking Ape.

It is right to say that its all just nomenclature. The differences in physical amount or configuration of dna has been determined. At least so far as we have checked. What however has not been checked is whether or not the cells of an animal can function with a human frame. The opposite has though. Human has not too hard a time propagating inside a pig. This has not been tested as far as completely switching all the cells. I believe they were testing to see if they could propagate human blood in a pig. And that only requires marrow. So its certainly a lesser example than what I'm talking about. Anywhoo some differences have been determined. Others have not. The scientists are thankful as it ensures them continuing employment

Biological differences as previously stated, also a higher intelligence complex. Top it all off with religion and science.

Philosophically the only difference is the ability to reason. Animals are only able to make decisions in the present i.e. whether to eat, drink, sleep, fight, run away without considering future consequences. Man has an understanding of the future and can weigh pros and cons and make decisions based on that.

If thought and computation done by the brain after taking on sensory data are taken to be the same thing then animals do think. It might be more accurate to say that while both humans and other animals can think and thus weigh options a human can go against logic and baser thing. Where as an animal would have a much harder time doing the same. Theres a steak on a table. both a person and a dog may think about taking it. "I can eat that and feel good"or a thought roughly like it may pass through either of their heads. A person can with less difficulty take that thought to the next degree of magnitude and think " but thats johns steak. and john would miss it." Of course anyone who has raised a great deal of dogs might notice that some dogs come a lot closer to the human magnitude of thought. While others even when smart don't seem to think much past themselves.
