Well all 3 sand siblings seem to have gone soft along with Gaara. But we really haven't seen him up against flesh and blood humans in part 2, maybe he's still sadistic just hasn't been able to show that side of him off since. Turning Madara's corpse into a puppet would show he's still as desensitized as ever.
